Kate Smallwood Ceramics

Rooted in wheel-throwing, my ceramics are made slowly by hand and finished in soft, earthy glazes. Each piece is unique—designed for everyday rituals and made to bring quiet beauty into the home.

A small, round, speckled ceramic vase sits on a lichen-covered rock in the foreground, with rolling brown moorland and distant grazing sheep beneath a bright blue sky with scattered clouds.

My Creative Story

Working from my small garden studio in Chester with my trusty assistant, Bertie — a scruffy lurcher who prefers sleeping to helping — I create small-batch ceramic pieces inspired by the wild, rugged beauty of the forests and coastlines of England, Scotland, and Wales.

Using the potter’s wheel, I focus on simple, organic forms finished with rustic, earthy glazes. There is a quiet beauty in handmade objects, and I am drawn to traditional techniques that honour the heritage of the craft. Working in small batches is an intentional escape from mass production; it brings a sense of nostalgia and connection, echoing the way my ancestors once worked with their hands. Creating something meaningful from earth and fire remains at the heart of my practice.

Alongside my studio work, I am a practising teacher based in North Wales. When I am not in the studio, you’ll find me in the art classroom of a lovely secondary school, where I strive to create a safe, creative space for students to explore, experiment, and express themselves. I graduated with a degree in Applied Arts, followed by a PGCE, and have since taught in secondary schools within the community as well as working as a college lecturer.
